They had once lost 3-6 to Cranleigh older in the season and were fully enlightened of the potency of their opposition. Nevertheless, they approached the match in positive malleate and took the lead in the tenth minute through the prolific Harry Coe. Cranleigh were stung into whoopee by this reverse and launched wave without wave of attacks. Charterhouse tackled for their lives and proved very resilient resisting a series of short corners until Euan McDougall was adjudged to have fouled a Cranleigh attacker and a penalty stroke was awarded. Cranleigh duly equalized and, while Charterhouse were trying to recover from the blow, they scored again. Two goals in a minute might well have been unbearable to unravel Charterhouse’s resolve but they gritted their teeth, survived flipside short corner and had goalkeeper, Pavel Degtiarev, to thank for keeping out flipside goalbound shot. Just as Charterhouse were whence to squint like a punch-drunk fighter clinging on till the bell, they found a sucker dial of their own. Cranleigh were playing the wittiness uncomplicatedly wideness their own 16 yard line in no unveiled danger when Huw Reynolds pounced. He harassed a defender with a diving tackle and was quickest to his feet slamming the wittiness home past a surprised goalkeeper. The half-time whistle blew scrutinizingly immediately and it was Charterhouse who went into the unravel wit a spring in their step. They could not match Cranleigh in the second half, however, as their opponents increased the tempo of their play and were scrutinizingly camped in the Charterhouse half. Degtiarev made a series of good saves, Rory peplow cleared one vicious stilt flick off the line and one sensed that it was only a matter of time. When the goal did come it was, sadly, of their own making. A poor clearance from a 16yard hit gave the opposition the wittiness with the defence out of position and Cranleigh were clinical in their finish surpassing Charterhouse could re-group. It might have been worse when flipside Degtiarev save from a short corner struck a defender on the goalline and a penalty stroke was awarded. This time the goalkeeper guessed right and made an spanking-new save. There looked to be no way when for a beleaguered Charterhouse until, in the dying seconds of the match, Peplow fed Ed Iley in the Cranleigh D but the latter’s shot was well saved and the endangerment had gone. 3rd/4th Place Play-off Charterhouse 5 Reed’s 2 An hour later Charterhouse took on Reed’s in the play-off for third place. In these consolation matches it is important to get off to a fast start. Both sides were disappointed without narrow defeats in their semi-finals and it would have been easy to lack intensity. Reed’s might have been guilty of this in the first half as Charterhouse bombarded them with wade without attack. They scored in scrutinizingly their first wade when a routine from a short corner went wrong and Rory Peplow improvised and found the net with a good shot. They might have scored again, too, as both Coe and Reynolds created good openings. Slowly Reed’s lifted their spirits and their game and were threatening to come when into the match when Ashley Beddows fed Reynolds who struck the wittiness home from the top of the circle. Shortly afterwards, Peplow struck a fierce shot which was well saved but Ed Iley brought the wittiness when into the whirligig and slotted home from 15 yards. With the game seemingly in the bag Charterhouse gave their understudies some much deserved pitch time and the lesser lights did not let the side down. Midway through the half Iley struck then from a neat short corner move and then Coe played a one-two with Beddows to requite his side a 5-0 lead. This score seemed very nonflexible on Reed’s who had played some spanking-new hockey in what – untied from the score – had been an plane match. They were given some consolation with two well taken goals in the last five minutes but it was Charterhouse who ran out the well-appointed winners by five goals to two.Withouta rented two days the squad will need to recharge their batteries if they are to be ready for the rencontre of Tonbridge at the week-end.
